Baldur's Gate 2 Remake: First Chapter Complete

A Remake of Baldur's Gate 2

They act sooner than we had anticipated… despite all the doubt, a team of dedicated modders has pulled through and remade the first chapter of Baldur’s Gate 2 in the Dragon Age engine!

First announced in early 2010, it’s taken over a year and it’s the smallest part of the game, so don’t expect the rest tomorrow, but this is a major accomplishment. They’ve implemented some of the Baldur’s Gate 2 classes, and there appears to be a /dwarf/. Plenty of spells (read: 50) have been restored, too, with new icons to represent them, and all the dialogue, speech and side-quests of Irenicus’ Dungeon are intact. There are some absent features still, obviously, but it really does give the Chapter 1 experience.

Cutscenes are quite impressive now – instead of just watching some sprites totter around the floor, a film student has reinterpreted them in the Dragon Age engine to be cinematic with panning shots of Irenicus’ face, and other nifty directing that breathes new life into those scenes (some of us) know inside out. They always had a lot of power to them from the dialogue and vocal delivery, but the isometric view was a limitation we’ve now overcome. Custom models, too, have been carefully crafted. Imoen, Minsc, Jaheira and Yoshimo are available as party members, but it still seems to stick to Dragon Age’s ‘party of 4′ limit, so you’ll not be able to structure your team quite the same as before.

Module 2, Athkatla, is currently in production. Expect many new structures, models and a long wait. Let’s support these folks, they’ve already done a stellar job.
